Barcelona

Curated travel intelligence for living well wherever you land.

INTRO

Barcelona can be too easy to do badly. Stay on Las Ramblas, eat whenever you're hungry, leave every dinner reservation until that afternoon, and you can spend three days wondering why everyone loves it.

For me, Barcelona starts in Sant Antoni: the market, neighbourhood restaurants, natural wine, and easy access to the old city without sleeping inside it. From there, the city becomes less about collecting Gaudí buildings and more about settling into a place that is unusually good at food, movement, markets and everyday life.

Barcelona was one of my first great European love stories. Some of that belonged to the city itself, and some of it happened on a rooftop by the W.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

I say this from experience: I was robbed twice in one day in Barcelona, and later had another man try the friendly-stranger version — asking for a cigarette, going in for a handshake, then trying to pull me off balance while reaching for my bag. None of this means Barcelona is a city to be afraid of. It does mean I am much more deliberate with my bag here than I am in most places.

THE SHORT VERSION

Barcelona works best as a gateway with a livable base. The beach is there when you want it, but daily life is stronger inland: neighbourhood markets, serious food, movement, recovery and rail connections that make it easy to move on.

For a few days or a couple of weeks, the advantage is how quickly you can establish a routine without living inside the busiest tourist streets.

Recommended base: Sant Antoni. Market at the centre, very good food and wine, walkable neighbourhood streets and easy access to the old city. Fifteen minutes to the edge of El Raval, around twenty-five to Born.

Recovery is unusually good here. Across Eixample, Sant Gervasi, Barceloneta and Poble Sec, you can build a day around sauna, cold immersion, breathwork, red light, massage, hammam and movement without defaulting to a hotel spa.

Timing rule for eating: arrive around 13:00–13:15 for lunch and 20:00–20:15 for dinner if you want the easiest shot at the smaller rooms.
