Ortigia is the island heart of Syracuse, a compact piece of Sicily where Greek foundations, Baroque façades, food markets and sea walls are layered into the same few streets. Syracuse was one of the great cities of the ancient Mediterranean, and Ortigia still feels unusually dense with history: you can cross the island on foot, turn a corner onto the water, then find a Greek temple embedded inside a later city. The mainland side of Syracuse is less cinematic, but it matters because it gives the historic core more everyday depth than a tiny island quarter would have on its own.
Syracuse was founded by Greeks from Corinth in the 8th century BC. UNESCO describes the city as an exceptional record of Mediterranean civilisation across Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab-Norman and later periods.
The Cathedral of Syracuse incorporates the columns of the 5th-century BC Temple of Athena, so one of the clearest pieces of ancient Greek architecture is literally built into the Baroque cathedral walls.
Why it works for Beautiful Abroad
Ortigia is strongest when you want to live mostly on foot: morning market, sea-wall walks, swimming access, excellent food and a beautiful evening atmosphere all sit close together. Work and some specialist wellness options extend onto mainland Syracuse, which is why we treat the two as one ecosystem rather than pretending the island alone has everything.
Where to live
- Piazza del Duomo / Fonte Aretusa / central Ortigia ↗Best all-around first base: dense services, restaurants, waterfront and historic atmosphere within minutes on foot. Caution: High-season crowds/prices; choose a side street if sensitive to evening noise.
- Giudecca / southeastern Ortigia ↗More residential and calmer while still fully walkable to the Duomo, water, food and daily services. Caution: Fewer immediate services than the central spine; uneven paving in places.
- Mercato / Tempio di Apollo / northern Ortigia ↗Strongest logistics zone: market and food density plus the easiest bridge connection to mainland Pilates, strength and services. Caution: Market mornings can be noisy; slightly less serene than southern Ortigia.
- Santa Lucia / Borgata (mainland) ↗Useful ecosystem alternative when mainland services, fitness access or parking matter more than sleeping inside the historic island. Caution: Not the full Ortigia living experience; requires bridge walk to the historic core.

- Cala Rossa ↗Most useful walkable everyday swim area on the island; easy to incorporate into normal life rather than making a full beach trip.
