Menton sits at the eastern end of the French Riviera, almost touching Italy, and it feels different from the louder Riviera names to the west. The old town climbs in tiers of apricot, ochre and yellow above the sea, while gardens, citrus and an unmistakable Italian influence soften the formality of the Côte d’Azur. It is beautiful without requiring a full resort performance: you can walk to the beach, buy groceries in town, take the train along the coast and still have a genuinely grand Riviera evening when you want one.
The Baroque Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange rises above the Sablettes beach and old port. The stairways and church parvis are one of the defining views of Menton’s old town.
Menton’s protected lemon and its exceptional gardens are part of the town’s identity, not just festival branding. The climate at the Italian border helped create a distinctive garden-and-citrus culture.
Why it works for Beautiful Abroad
Menton is one of the strongest no-car Riviera bases in the network. Centre-Ville keeps rail, groceries and daily life easy; the old town and Sablettes give atmosphere and sea access; Italy is a short train ride away. Pilates is usable rather than deep and dedicated recovery is thinner than in a spa destination, but the combination of walks, swims, food and rail freedom is unusually good.
Where to live
- Centre-Ville ↗Best full Tuesday-Test balance: flat/gentle walking, central services, Urban Reformer Lab, Flowy, Halles, reliable longer-stay options, station and multiple beaches. Caution: Summer promenade crowds; some older apartment stock; advanced spa/recovery depth is limited.
- Vieille Ville / Sablettes ↗Best choice when beauty of place and Plage des Sablettes matter most; still walkable to Centre services and food. Caution: More stairs/slopes, fewer good longer-stay options and less convenient with luggage/grocery loads.
- Garavan ↗Useful quieter alternative with Menton-Garavan station and excellent Italy-facing rail access. Caution: Further from the densest everyday services; slopes inland; not an equal default Base for most users.
