Lefkada is an Ionian island with one logistical trick that changes the experience: it is connected to mainland Greece by a causeway and bridge, so you can arrive without a ferry. Lefkada Town sits beside a lagoon and marina on the island’s northeast edge, with low, colourful buildings and a practical resident town behind the holiday image. The island’s west coast is the dramatic side — high cliffs and astonishing blue beaches — while the capital is where everyday life, services and onward transport are easiest.
The fortress of Agia Mavra has guarded the approach to Lefkada since around 1300. Built originally by the Franks and altered under later rulers, it sits beside the lagoon just before the town.
That fixed mainland connection makes Lefkada unusual among Greek island bases: you get island geography without making every arrival, departure or mainland errand dependent on a boat schedule.

Lefkada Town is the practical base: marina, movement, groceries, pharmacy, food and services are concentrated there, with quieter apartments around its edges. Agios Ioannis helps with nearby swimming, but the famous west-coast beaches still require transport.
