Florence is one of those cities whose fame can flatten it into a checklist, but the useful version is still a real, walkable city built on much older foundations. Roman Florentia came first; medieval wealth and civic ambition followed; then the Medici era and Renaissance transformed art, architecture and the idea of the city itself. Brunelleschi’s dome still dominates the skyline, but staying around Sant’Ambrogio puts the monumental centre within walking distance while giving you a neighbourhood market, bakeries and a little more ordinary Florentine life.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore was completed with Brunelleschi’s revolutionary dome in the 15th century and remains the visual anchor of Florence.
Sant’Ambrogio Market opened in 1873, when Florence was being reshaped after its period as capital of the Kingdom of Italy. It remains one of the city centre’s livelier everyday markets.
Why it works for Beautiful Abroad
We treat Florence as a short cultural chapter rather than forcing it into the same long-stay mould as a coastal base. Sant’Ambrogio gives the stay a practical centre; good movement and recovery options keep routines intact; and Florence’s rail position makes onward travel exceptionally easy. The point is to have a few very good days without letting logistics consume the city.
Where to live
- Piazza Lorenzo Ghiberti / Via dei Macci / quieter adjacent side streets ↗Sant’Ambrogio’s market-centered living core gives a genuinely local three-day Florence rhythm while remaining walkable to the historic center. Caution: Piazza Sant’Ambrogio and livelier Pietrapiana/Macci stretches can be noisy; prefer side streets or courtyard rooms.
- Via della Mattonaia / Via dei Pilastri / Piazza d’Azeglio-facing quiet pocket ↗Best choice when sleep quality matters more than being directly on the market frontage. Caution: Slightly less immediate for market/bar energy, but still fully walkable.
