The place
Cagliari is Sardinia’s capital, built across hills above a broad Mediterranean waterfront. The old Castello quarter rises over Marina, Stampace and Villanova, while Poetto gives the city a long urban beach that feels unusually close to real city life. Cagliari has been shaped by Phoenician-Punic, Roman, Pisan, Aragonese and later Italian rule, so it has archaeological depth without feeling frozen in history. It is first and foremost a working island capital — markets, universities, neighbourhood bars, offices and ferries — with the sea threaded through it.
History under the city
Cagliari’s archaeological layers include the Punic necropolis of Tuvixeddu and a Roman amphitheatre carved partly into the hillside, while the fortified Castello quarter preserves major Pisan and later monuments.
Landmark
The Bastione di Saint Remy is one of the city’s great orientation points, connecting the lower city with Castello and opening to wide views over the rooftops and sea.
Why it works for Beautiful Abroad
This is one of the better city-plus-beach bases in the collection. Stampace and Villanova give walkable daily life; San Benedetto adds the market; Poetto works as the beach ecosystem rather than the default place to sleep. Reformer, coworking, recovery and everyday services are genuinely available, and the Palermo ferry makes Sardinia part of a wider no-flight Mediterranean route.
Where to live
- Stampace ↗Best all-around living choice: compact historic streets, strong station/port access, coworking, Reformer proximity, repeat dining and the strongest longer-stay remote-work accommodation. Caution: Historic buildings can mean stairs/limited outdoor space; some slopes toward Castello; strength training is not immediately on the doorstep.
- Villanova ↗Calmer alternative with strong walkability and a convincing ordinary-Tuesday ecosystem; Cultína, Babeuf and Villanova apartment stock support longer stays. Caution: Slightly weaker station/port access and less immediate dining/commercial density than Stampace.
- San Benedetto ↗Best pure everyday-errand zone, anchored by the temporary San Benedetto market and strong commercial density. Caution: Less atmospheric as a Beautiful Abroad first choice; weaker longer-stay accommodation options than Stampace/Villanova.
- Poetto ↗Excellent city-beach ecosystem and a genuine everyday lifestyle asset, but better treated as an extension of a central Base than the default place to live. Caution: More seasonal and less complete for coworking, Pilates, errands and urban dining; bus/taxi needed for much of the city stack.
